The Roman Villa Museum
Beneath the Somerset countryside, the remains of a Roman villa lay largely undisturbed for centuries. First discovered in 1832, further archaeological excavations revealed an extensive estate dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries, offering a remarkable insight into life in Roman Britain.
Set within the grounds of The Newt in Somerset, the project brings this history to life through two contrasting approaches to architecture. A contemporary museum, defined by its elegant 50-metre glass elevation, sits above the original archaeological remains, while a meticulously reconstructed Roman villa recreates the craftsmanship, materials and building techniques of the period.
SHIRE provided quantity surveying and project management services to the main contractor, contributing to the delivery of this technically complex scheme, where traditional craftsmanship, contemporary engineering and sensitive heritage considerations came together.
The project received a RIBA South West Award in 2023, recognising its architectural quality and contribution to the understanding of Britain's Roman heritage.
